blagodarim vojvodo!

So much happening in 2020 and hardly a peep from Secret Chiefs 3! Where to begin... after our home studio, Forking Paths, narrowly escaped oblivion in the CZU Lightning Complex fire in August, we relocated it to the desert, where else? We're building it anew -- bigger, better. So much better. Many know we've been working on TWO Holy Vehm albums over the last three years. Notwithstanding some welcome interruptions from other recent metal happenings, those records are getting close (next up, we have to figure out how to record choir parts during a pandemic). In the mean time, with all the madness in the air, we decided to take it over the edge by putting together a HORRORTHON. It's a playlist of horror-themed music from Secret Chiefs 3 over the years, re-imagined, re-mastered and re-contextualized. It'll put you inside the Silver Shamrock Factories of today's psychic claustropolis. The "Horrorthon"... our version of a supercharged soundtrack to your isolated Halloween. We took a curator's liberties with this music, the mastering, and added film dialogue interludes & other goodies. Fresh twists on familiar threads... something to rot your teeth on while waiting like skeletons for the next phase of Secret Chiefs 3 to emerge!

𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏
We are currently putting together a 20th Anniversary edition of our third record, Book M.
Announcements will come soon regarding format options and any extra things that might attend this anniversary edition. No pre-order yet. Hold tight, all of that is still a ways off, but we wanted to let people know this was coming.
𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌, along with Book of Horizons, holds pride of place among most SC3 fans. The band concurs with the general assessment.
Moreover, I don’t think we’re overstating things if we say that Book M has been absolutely vindicated by 20 years of subsequent developments in music and culture.
If this record came out now, the impression would NOT be the one we were used to getting back then.
The whole back-handed compliment thing: “this record is kind of a ‘weird’ but well-made & whacky adventure through foreign genres”, or “these pranksters get away with throwing in the kitchen sink thanks to their well-developed sense of kitch”.
pfff. Today’s ears would not detect even a whiff of kitch in Book M. Thank God that that kind of sh*t’ talk is gone.
If anything, far from being a globe-trotting party celebrating the mid-term post-colonial 'global village' con-fusion aesthetic, Book M is, and always has been, a massive inaugural grimoire of the 21st Century. Done on the cheap, indeed, it’s a record that has managed to open a vast chasm of inter-related thematics, and over time has persisted in firing relevant musical fruits off into the future from its long-lasting musical Abyss at the turn of the Millennium.
Secret Chiefs 3 owes MUCH to the few but formidable fans of serious and challenging music from back then, when it came out. It’s almost like these listeners, like us, had to violently discard the generally superficial (and usually idiotic) musical sensibilities of the times, just to create enough psychic space where a bit of depth and nuance in music could be roundly embraced.
𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌 was meant to cater to THEIR sense of the existence of a lost musical dimension, which was slowly being recovered.
So many of you became lifer Secret Chiefs 3 fans in that moment because of your against-the -grain open-ness during that bleak musical period.
Your support back then was a major milestone for us.
Ok, this 20 year anniversary announcement technically comes a week late, since the majority of people who originally bought 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌 rightly remember it arriving on their doorstep on or around Sept 11, 2001 — THAT day.
A bunch of weird, weird things happened around the release of that record.
That’s a subject for the 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌: 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭 series we’ll be starting here (see the final line of this post).
But for clarity we'll tell part of it here briefly: 20 years ago, albums were released on Tuesdays. Our distributor’s release date was September 18. Our label’s release date was Sept. 11. Our trusty label’s mail-order (which is still going, since 1998!) timed the CD shipment to land on people’s doorsteps right at that fateful moment on Sept 11. So if you’re one of the people who remembers this record playing during the period of major conflagration and upheaval, no you did not hallucinate that, and no you are not alone. A majority of people got the record on Sept 11.
Respecting the many greater issues of that moment which rightfully put a mere album release in its historical shadow, moving forward we’ll just go with the “Third Tuesday” as the official original date of this thing. But now you know that part of the story.
There are much more interesting stories, however, so stay tuned!
Every third Tuesday of the month we’ll be making a post here that explores one of the dimensions of the 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌 record. We’ll just keep posting these comments as “𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌: 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬” up until the actual release of 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐌 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏. After that we’ll shut up again about it for another 20 years.
PS ok, yes Holy Vehm is the next upcoming new full-length record, and there is something else new, an unprecedented thing, coming. You'll hear about it very soon!
