  1. LACUNA COIL Enter Studio; Announce New Album Title LACUNA COIL — the Italian hard rock sensation, whose standout Active Rock singles for "Heaven's A Lie" and "Swamped", led Billboard to name them one of last year's biggest success stories — entered the studio on September 3 to begin tracking "Karmacode", the highly anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed commercial breakthrough album, "Comalies". The new effort is currently being co-produced once again with Waldemar Sorychta and LACUNA COIL and will be mixed by the acclaimed Ronald Prent (RAMMSTEIN, H.I.M., IRON MAIDEN) and mastered by Darcy Proper (STEELY DAN, PORCUPINE TREE, R.E.M.) at Galaxy Studios in Belgium. An early 2006 release is expected. Andrea Ferro (vocals) describes the meaning behind the album's unique title: "When it came to coming up with an album title I wanted to combine one 'old' word that is spiritually connected with another that offers a link to our more 'modern' times. If there were an actual translation of 'karmacode,' it would be something like 'spiritual DNA and the message behind it'. The title attempts to balance our modern, overwhelming, self-centered, fast-paced lifestyles and the desire we all have to live a more spiritual, more compassionate and more fulfilling life." With three full-length albums and two EPs to their credit, LACUNA COIL has ensured that each offering further enunciates the subtle, solemn beauty the sextet creates. "Comalies" maturely exhibits the trademarked gothic overtones and poignant melancholy of their haunting musical landscape. In early 2004, LACUNA COIL's successes were validated with an invitation to participate in that year's Ozzfest, supporting such metal stalwarts as JUDAS PRIEST, SLAYER and OZZY himself. Additional summer touring with P.O.D. and Ozzfest off-date performances with SUPERJOINT RITUAL and DEVILDRIVER gave the band its busiest season yet. Led by the undeniably captivating Cristina Scabbia (vocals), the group garnered mainstream acclaim from such publications as Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Stuff, among others. The group spent this summer performing at some of Europe's premier festivals alongside such household names as GREEN DAY, INCUBUS and SYSTEM OF A DOWN, while completing the songwriting process for the new album. "Karmacode" is shaping up to be the band's career defining release and it will force the entire hard rock world to take notice.
  2. KATATONIA Complete Work On New Album Sweden's KATATONIA have posted the following message on their official web site: "After spending literally the whole Swedish summer (and not seeing much of it) in a barn called Fascination Street studios, working day and night to finish our seventh full-length album, we finally made it — the album is recorded and mixed and will be mastered tomorrow at Cutting Room, Stockholm. Release date, album/song titles and artwork to be announced and presented in one of the next updates. Now, the band departs to Mother Russia for the weekend for a two-gig happening, a rather good oportunity to celebrate the massive work we now leave behind us. Let the vodka flow!" Check out pictures of the recording/mixing sessions at www.katatonia.com. KATATONIA's last album, "Viva Emptiness", was released in 2003. As previously reported, The End Records recently licensed through their sub-label Infinite Vinyl series KATATONIA's "Saw You Drown" — a mini album from 1998 that collectors regard as maybe the rarest and most-wanted item in KATATONIA's discography. The vinyl version is limited to 1,000 copies, all hand-numbered. It also features an unreleased band photo, lyrics to all songs, plus personal liner notes from the band.

  4. THEATRE OF TRAGEDY Sign With AFM RECORDS Norway's THEATRE OF TRAGEDY have inked a deal with Germany's AFM Records. Last Friday, the band and label met in Hamburg to discuss their future. The gothic metal act are currently working on their new album and have most of the material already completed. Musically, the band are promising a return to their early sound. "If you want, you can consider this album as a kind of follow-up to [1998's] 'Aegis'," drummer Hein Frode Hansen said of the new album's musical direction. "For us this was a very natural way right now." THEATRE OF TRAGEDY's as-yet-untitled new album will be the group's first to feature singer Nell (THE CREST), who replaced Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull (currently in LEAVES' EYES) in early 2004. A March 24, 2006 release is expected. Download audio samples of two demo songs recorded last year: "Fade" (mp3), "Seven" (mp3).
  5. MNEMIC Confirm Singer's Departure, Announce Replacement Danish modern metallers MNEMIC have confirmed the departure of frontman Michael Bøgballe. The band's official statement on the matter reads as follows: "It is sad it has come to this, but Michael has chosen a different path in his life and wishes to leave the band. This last weekend, we did our last gig together in Gothenburg, Sweden — which was one of the most intense and energetic gigs we have ever done, and this night will not be forgotten for a very long time. "Thanks to all of our friends in IMPIOUS, ENGEL, DARK TRANQUILLITY, ARCH ENEMY and most important Patric Ullaeus, who came out and made it all special for everybody! We now would like to take this time to wish Michael all the best and good luck in future endeavours." Michael has issued the following statement regarding his departure from the group: "It is with great sadness that I must announce my departure from MNEMIC. From today I'm no longer officially the singer of MNEMIC. There's a thousand ways to put this but none seem just accurate right now, so I'm just gonna be honest with ya all. There are two main reasons in my life for doing this. One is that mý girlfriend is pregnant with my baby and I therefore want to spend some more time at home. Second is that I'm sick and tired of being broke all the time. This is by far the hardest decision I ever had to make 'cuz I love the metal, the tours and the band. What we did together, no one can take that away from me and I'll remember every country we've visited for as long as I live. And to the people I've met on the road and all the fans: Thank you so much for being there. You made all the difference to me... "I know for sure that the remaining four boys in MNEMIC will not slow down. We part as best friends and will remain so......You guys are the shit!! Thank you. "And Bobo from the Summer Breeze Festival: Fuck you! "Goodbye everybody....I had a blast...and who knows.....maybe we'll see each other somewhere in the future..." MNEMIC have already recruited Michael's replacement — former TRANSPORT LEAGUE/B-THONG singer Tony Jelencovich. Commented the group: "Tony has been a longtime friend of the band, and we are 100 percent confident that he is the right man for the job! "Also SPECIAL THANKS to video director Patric Ullaeus and his wife Tara at ww.Revolver.se spending time with the band to do another brilliant shoot in Gothenburg this weekend. This lineup change will NOT, in any way, effect MNEMIC's North American Fall tour with MESHUGGAH, GOD FORBID and THE HAUNTED." MNEMIC are continuing to tour in support of their sophomore album, "The Audio Injected Soul", which was released in September 2004 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2003's "Mechanical Spin Phenomena" was recorded at AntFarm Studios in Aarhus, Denmark with producer Tue Madsen.

  12. KATAKLYSM Complete Work On 'In The Arms Of Devastation' Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM have completed work on their eighth studio album, "In the Arms of Devastation", for a February 20, 2006 release through Nuclear Blast Records. Commented guitarist/producer Jean-François Dagenais: "After having spent two months behind the production helm for the new KATAKLYSM album, we have now achieved what we wanted from A to Z, I've worked extremely hard on this record to get it to sound like no other KATAKLYSM album and I must say when you have the time to work on something, it DOES benefit greatly! I'm really happy with the results we have. Everyone in the band gave 150 percent and I can't wait for everyone to hear this album. I have to agree with one of Maurizio's [vocals] previous statement when he said this album on a technical side and with it's blazing tempos has been the most difficult album for me to record my guitar tracks... [it] felt like at some point my wrist and fingers were gona give in! But it was well worth the pain!" "In The Arms of Devastation" track listing: 01. Temptation's Nest 02. Let Them Burn 03. Crippled & Broken 04. Open Scars 05. To Reign Again 06. In Words of Desperation 07. Like Angels Weeping the Dark 08. It Turns to Rust 09. The Road to Devastation KATAKLYSM's only scheduled show at this time is an appearance at the Windy City Invetational festival on October 1 in Chicago, Illinois.

  14. OPETH Frontman: 'We've Never Jumped On Trends Or Chances To Make Money' OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt recently spoke to Decibel magazine about the making of the group's new album, "Ghost Reveries", and the band's decision to sign with Roadrunner Records, among other topics. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow: On "Ghost Reveries": "I'm psyched, very happy. I've been working on this record for ever three months. This new album has the potential to become my favorite. Probably because from the beginning we were more meticulous, it's more finished overall. In the past, we sort of just threw everything together and then were like, 'Oh, we'll just fix that later.' For previous albums, no one knew the songs but me, but for this album we were well rehearsed. I got the feeling when I listened to these songs in the mix that stuff was happening all the time — just pow! pow! pow! pow! Which is what I wanted! I want the album to be one of those records that you listen to once and you're like, 'What was that?' And you have to listen again — and with the long songs I don't want people to be bored." On how a jump to Roadrunner Records will affect OPETH's loyal fanbase: "[Roadrunner's] a big label; I'm sure they will help us, but for a band like us, we have to be really careful. We have a credibility that we've earned from over 15 years of playing together. We've never jumped on trends or chances to make money, so in the eyes of our old fans, this tour [the recently completed Sounds of the Underground tour] is probably like our sell-out moment. I want us to maintain that credibility, but I'm not stupid. I want to play in front of as many people as possible while maintaining that credibility." On having to compromise for the sake of radio/MTV airplay: "I would love to do a single. We have this soft song, you know, a ballad, and I was thinking, 'Maybe that could be the single?' Because it's short and it's good! But the rest of the album is all heavy. "You know, it's really weird talking about a single when you have ten-minute songs! And that are heavy! [Roadrunner] want us to do edits, which I understand, but it's going to suck! They obviously want to do a video, and have a specific first song ready for airplay [the interview was conducted before the band shot a video for 'The Grand Conjuration' — Ed.], but I don't like people tampering with my songs! But I'm not stupid. I know that no one's going to play a ten-minute song and, as I said, I want people to hear us. Even if they hear a shitty three-minute edit, it's better than nothing. I'm probably going to hate it, but if that's the only way for a band like us to reach out to new people, then I guess that's the way it is."
  15. KATATONIA Resume Recording New Album Sweden's KATATONIA have re-entered Fascination Street studio, located in the outskirts of Örebro, Sweden, to resume recording their new album, tentatively due in EARLY 2006 via Peaceville Records. The band have posted the following recording update on their official web site: "After a few needed breaks, including a kick ass visit at the Wacken festival with one of our side projects (BLOODBATH), we put ourselves under house arrest down the studio again. During these last weeks of early mornings and late nights, all the clean/lead guitars, loops, percussion and keyboards were finished. Currently, we're halfways through the last stage, recording vocals in studio B while the mix is running hot in studio A. It's taken all summer, but the most heavy, beautiful and professionally sounding album we've ever done is finally about to become full circle." Check out pictures of the recording sessions at www.katatonia.com.
