VÖ: 3.2. Ich kann ihn förmlich hören - den Seufzer der Erleichterung aus dem Lager der alteingesessenen In Flames-Fans, unter denen die Neo-Metal-Bemühungen der letzten beiden Alben REROUTE TO REMAIN und vor allem SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE nicht unbedingt einhellige Begeisterung hervorgerufen hatten. Denn auf COME CLARITY lassen die Pioniere des Göteborg-Sounds ihre Death Metal-Wurzeln wieder deutlich stärker in den Vordergrund treten. Dabei ist das neue Album aber keinesfalls eine reine Retro-Rutsche, sondern vor allem ein eindeutiges Statement, dass das - mehr oder weniger unverhohlene - Schielen auf kommerziellere Songs ein Ende hat. Nach dem furiosene einlietenden Triumvirat aus 'Take This Life' (die erste Single, sehr mächtig!), 'Leeches' und 'Reflect The Storm' wird rasch klar, dass die kompromisslosere Handhabung des zugrundeliegenden Stilfloskeln eine betont innovativen Kreativität nicht im Weg steht: Auf 'Dead End' liefert sich Sänger Anders Fridén ein packendes Duett mit der Singer/Songwriterin Lisa Miskovsky - und das, was jetzt schwer nach Ballade riecht, ist einer der härtesten Titel des gesamten Albums. Die "Ballade" liefern In Flames in Form des Titelsongs, auf dem Fridén die mit Abstand reifste Gesangsleistung seiner Karriere zeigt - und wir reden hier nicht von besonders artikuliertem Gebrüll. Wie man mit sparsamem Riffeinsatz echte Nackenbrecher konstruiert, zeigt das brachiale, mit einem krachigen Hardcore-Refrain versehene 'Scream', dass vor allem der zurzeit so angesagten, extrem In Flames-beeinflussten US-Metalcore-Brigade zeigen dürfte, wo der Hammer hängt. Nach diesen ersten sechs Songs fällt COME CLARITY ein klein wenig ab, wobei das ursprünglich als Titelsong gehandelte 'Crawling Through Knifes' mit seiner psychotischen Grundstimmung noch einmal einen Höhepunkt darstellt. Es liegt nicht an der Qualität der Songs für sich genommen, sondern vor allem daran, dass diese Band irgendwann in ihrer Karriere die Entscheidung getroffen hat, innerhalb eines schmalen stilistischen Spektrums die effektivst möglichen Songs zu erschaffen. Diese Herangehensweise hat in all den Jahren ihrer Existenz das Profil von In Flames geschärft und uns bisher vor experimentellen Entgleisungen bewahrt. Der Preis dafür war schon immer, dass - zumindest in meinen Ohren - von jedem Album nur eine bestimmte Anzahl Songs dauerhaft im Ohr blieb. COME CLARITY hat dafür sieben aus 13 möglichen Kandidaten: eine Quote, vor der ich nur meinen Hut ziehen kann. Because this band project with super group potential got its name from an unfortunate secret service agency founded back in 2001 by the US Department of Defense.
