LEATHER NUNN
Take The Night
Metal Reunion 2003
Now, this is something! One of the most sought after albums on vinyl re-released on CD with bonus tracks… only Greeks can do that. I’ll give my best to do an interview with Leather Nunn guys, but let’s just mention a little something about this band. Originating from Jacksonville, Florida, Leather Nunn is one of the most interesting metal spawns of this state. Unfortunately, “Take The Night” from 1986 remained their only piece of work and even the original vinyl pressing was done by the band. There’s more detailed history as an addition to the booklet. It’s hard to make a proper comparison regarding music, but just saying that it’s classic US heavy metal should be enough to the acquaintances of the 80’s American sound. All 9 songs that were originally on the LP are great and I wonder what has kept this band out of the reach of the wider audience and enthusiasts, even zines that featured some older US cult bands from the 80’s like Overlorde, Medieval Steel, Tyrant’s Reign or Salem’s Wych. So leave it to the Greeks to do all the work and once again show their dedication to metal and come out triumphant. Remastering (if there was any) was done excellently, so the sound is nearly crystal clear and a bit rougher 80’s production reaches its full potential. Surely, it can’t be the same as on vinyl, but this way you can spin it as many times as you wish, without the fright of ever damaging the disc. Leather Nunn tunes range from the absolute classic sounds of ‘Fool’s Way Out’, ‘Another Bite’, ‘Taken Ground’ (the best song here by far!) and ‘New Life’ (right behind it), to the more rocking moments of ‘Take The Night’ and ‘You’re The One’, to the mid-paced but heavier sound of ‘Leather Nunn’ and ‘Mental Asylum’, top the only balladic tune here ‘Take Me Back’. That’s as far as the album tracks go, and 4 bonus ones are even better! I don’t know from where did Metal reunion guys dig them out, but if those were album cutouts I don’t know what to say. Their running order, as shown on the back cover’ is mixed up from what you can actually hear on the disc, but that doesn’t change the fact that they kick ass. ‘Ride Forever’ is the only track here that can be labeled as power metal and it sinks with ease every single album song. ‘Keep The Dream Alive’, ‘Driving Me Wild’ and ‘Let The Children Pray’ are all mid-paced songs, but all keep very high level in every possible sense, except that their production is a bit inferior to the album, but nothing to severe, so there’s absolutely not a single bad moment here. All the lyrics are printed in the booklet, with original band members’ liner notes and some photos, together with the original artwork – in one word GREAT! So you’d better grab this album while you still can, ‘cause CD is limited to 1000 copies, so it will become hard to find pretty soon. (10/10)
