DREAM THEATER, OPETH, BIGELF, UNEXPECT To Team Up For European PROGRESSIVE NATION Tour New York progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER will take their Progressive Nation tour overseas for the first time with a run through Europe throughout September, October and November 2009.

DaggerЅpawn
Daggerspawn is domestic act that started out in 2005. with their vision of crafting very brutal, yet technical brand of Death Metal. I have seen them live at the beginning of their career and truth be told, I did not like what I’ve heard that much. But the years of experience helped them to sharpen the edges of their weapon and it is notable on their debut album „Suffering Upon The Throne Of Depravity“ (before that, they released the demo under the same name, couple of splits and even one live DVD). One very nice thing is that this release will come out in a couple of days on a foreign label, which is very huge thing for the band from our land. Cover art was drawn by famous John Zig, who worked also for f.ex. Suffocation and Dying Fetus, very nice work indeed and the motive is in connection with Lovecraftian / occult themes the and is dealing with in their lyrics. Let us now go on to the most important aspect of an album – music. Although Daggerspawn guys label themselves as „technical“, that tag is not prevalent in their music, meaning that it is not drowned in uncomprehensable and countless boring parts. No, the tech aspect is only used in order to put some nice twists and turns here and there. Their most dangerous tool is the brutality, which I would link back to Florida years prevalently but you can also hear that more modern bands left their their mark on Daggerspawn. Songs are not in „non stop blast“ vein (thankfully, I must add), the arrangement work is on good enough level so that one won’t get bored by listening to the album. I can feel that Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse are worshipped very much in these guys’ ranks, for the proof just listen to the track „In the Bane and Enlightment of Man“, which sounds like a cross between Cannibal twisted riffs a la „Perverse Suffering“ and MA atmospheric and evil guitar fills. Vocal of Danilo is mainly growling, occasional shout / screams are featured and he remined me on Mike’s (Sinister) work on, say, „Hate“. The main thing that bothered me on the album is use of rhythm machine, the thing that I am allergic on and which does not suit the band of this style (hell, it doesn’t suit any Metal band except for Summoning and their likes...). Daggerspawn has a drummer in their line-up, and as I know, cursed machine was used because of lack of money. Pity, as I would like to hear these songs with power that only the real drums can have. I guess that I will have to catch them in live setting these days for that... All in all, this is one good release from up’n’coming band, check it out if you can. http://metal-sound.net/reviews.php?read=276

Rain Delay
Rain Delay is young Serbian band who started out in 2003., their first album “As I Bequeath My Yesterday” came out in 2005. and finally I have in front of me “We Forget”, which was released at the end of 2008. The progress of this act is very evident – at the beginning they were atmospheric Doom / Death, and on this release they stretched out their musical boundaires as far as they could. Basis of their sound is undoubtfully Doom, to be more precise – its softer form; it is much evident in prevalent tempo of the music and dirgey riffs (check out the fourth song “Deep”, as the most obvious example). But these boys and a girl didn’t want to be trapped in boundaires of one genre, so they have added influences from bands like Katatonia and Opeth, some Gothic and Melodeath overtones and even modern rock and Prog parts. Featured vocal styles here are male growls and clean and also they have a female singer in the band; I did not like Sana’s style that much as she sounded a bit in Goth / Sympho vein to me and I don’t feel that it fits too much in the picture but at least they gained even more variety with her... Tempo (from slowest to even occasional blasts) and riff changes are omnipresent giving the arrangements very rich character; also Rain Delay is not afraid to sometimes turn off the distortion and add acoustic guitars. The result is an album which simply needs repeated listens in order to fully comprehend what’s going on in here; very bold move for a Serbian band since the majority of our acts revel in tried and true waters. Also some nice words should be said about the production work, which was done in Chainroom studio in Senta; the sound is full and up-to-date with today’s tendencies giving the band needed space to try out to push their album outside. Also they have paid attention to the visual side of the release as the booklet is nice looking and designed in vein of album’s vibe, really nice. The most negative aspect I could point out is that the songs sometimes sound a bit confusing, song parts seemed to be slap-sticked to one another as too much of experimentation could easily lead you into the confusion (check out the “Fulcrum”); the good thing is that it doesn’t happen that much but still they should paid attention to it in the future so that their stuff don’t sound forced out. “We Forget” is one of the best Serbian metal releases in a last few years, check it out. http://metal-sound.net/reviews.php?read=285

Sculptor
Sculptor is new name on Serbian metal scene, they were familiar before under the monicker Inhuman Form, and that band was playing tribute to immortal Death, but members decided to start more engaging and serious work and thus Sculptor was born. “The Verdict”, their first demo, was handed to me at Morbid Angel gig by their handsome guitar player, and beside recording this work, the guys were active at gigs. So, it is clear to you that we have very young band here so let’s go and see what they have to offer... Sculptor members describe their music as experimental DM, and that is the most appropriate description, really. They are not trying to copy any single well known force but rather they want to pave their own, new path; the thing that is a bit unusual for our domestic scene where the tribute bands gather the biggest crowds, sad but true... Don’t let the “experimental” tag scare you away, as Sculptor doesn’t make uncomprehensable and schizoid song arrangements or use whatever style possible, instead tracks are rather nicely sculptured (no pun intended) although they don’t follow classic “verse-chorus” formula. Sculptor just let their inspiration work for itself. If I could make some comparisons with some familiar groups, it would most certainly be later Death and Atheist circa “Unquestionable Presence”. Death influence is more than understandable, considering the background of the band, and you can feel it in riffing and fucking great melodic solo department mostly, but also in vox of Ur (btw, he reminds me from time to time on Ron from Coroner). You probably got the drift, the guy uses comprehendable shouting and occasional screaming. Atheist can be heard in not ordinary and sometimes unpredictable song developments, and I feel that the sole mentioning of these two giant bands should be more than appealing to you, right? Also, I have the information that they try to link their lyrics to music as close as possible, unfortunately I haven’t read them as they are not included with the demo... This fact too tells a lot about a determination and serious attitude of this (still) fresh band, and it is a thing for true respect, really. Although some riffs here and there can sound a little uninspiring to you, due to the fact that they can remind you of the stuff from f.ex. Death, I feel that this can be linked to their young age. Things about their stance that I stated above are the most important; the will to create and not to copy, and their craft will hopefully get better with time, so it can be forgiven. Also I have one more complaint... The material was recorded in Chainroom studio, one of the most famous places to record Metal here in Serbia, but it is mostly visited by more modern bands. I do not feel that its sound did justice to “The Verdict” as it crave a bit more for “older” sound, so to say. Guitars should be just a tad bit rawer, and drum sound is really weak – it sounds like a goddamn rhythm machine, for fuck’s sake! So let’s hope that this will be corrected for their future stuff, as they are already in process of creating and recording their debut album “Forming...”, which will be conceptual work. Sculptor is searching for the label to release it, and if you got interested due to this shitty scribble of mine you can download “The Verdict” here: http://rapidshare.com/files/122887342/Scul...D_2008.rar.html (it is OK to share this link as the guys themselves are doing it). Check out this promising act. http://metal-sound.net/reviews.php?read=286
