STRAPPING YOUNG LAD Begin Recording New Album STRAPPING YOUNG LAD guitarist Jed Simon has issued the following update on the recording process for the group's follow-up to last year's "Alien": "Got most everything done on drums [on Tuesday, March 7]... Gene [Hoglan] will amaze you, as usual, with some sick drumming! [On Wednesday, March 8] we finish up at the Armoury, check out their MySpace profile, and you can see where we do a lot of recording, a wonderful studio. "[On Thursday, March 9] we move on to Profile Studio for the rest of the month for everything else...guitar, bass, vocals, keys...then mixing, which I'm not sure where yet, but will let you know! We are taking pictures and film and will have some stuff available to view soon... "This album really is a stomper, looking forward to getting it on the road!!!" STRAPPING YOUNG LAD have secured a second-stage slot at this year's Ozzfest, which is scheduled to kick off July 1 in San Francisco, California.

TOOL: North American Release Date For '10,000 Days' Announced According to Billboard.com, Volcano has set a May 2 North American release date for the new TOOL album, entitled "10,000 Days". The 77-minute, 11-song prog-metal odyssey, which is said to be "packed with plenty of eight minute-plus twisted riff-a-thons, odd-tempo polyrhythms and the band's trademark, eerie interludes" (according to Kerrang! magazine), is the follow-up to 2001's "Lateralus", which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 2.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

SHADOWS FALL: 'Fallout From The War' Artwork, Release Date Announced On June 13, metal titans SHADOWS FALL return with their much-anticipated new release, "Fallout from the War", on Century Media Records. The record's sessions were again produced and mixed by longtime friend Zeuss (HATEBREED, GOD FORBID), at Planet Z Studios in the band's home state of Massachusetts. "Fallout from the War" is a must-have for the band's dedicated following as each of the album's eleven tracks is either a brand-new, original SHADOWS FALL track, an exclusive, brand-new cover song, or a newly re-recorded version of rare material from over the years. "Fallout from the War" track listing: 01. In Effigy 02. Will To Rebuild 03. Haunting Me Endlessly 04. Seize The Calm 05. Carpal Tunnel 06. Going, Going, Gone 07. Deadworld 08. This Is My Own 09. December (ONLY LIVING WITNESS cover) 10. Mark Of The Squealer (LEEWAY cover) 11. Teasin' Pleasin' (DANGEROUS TOYS cover) Commented vocalist Brian Fair: "This album is meant to be a companion piece to our last full-length, 'The War Within', and it contains six originals songs written during the sessions for that very album. We returned home from an amazing summer on Ozzfest 2005 and decided to get together to record these songs as a perfect way to close out 'The War Within' album cycle and give our fans a chance to hear some killer new material. The recording sessions themselves went incredibly well. We were able to realize the full potential of these songs and with Zeuss' help we were able craft an amazing disc with a wide variety of styles and emotions. These songs cover everything you have come to expect from us and it was also a chance to re-record a few tracks that had previously only been available as bonus tracks in Japan and Europe, including a new version of 'Deadworld' — a song that's one of the first-ever SHAD tunes (dating back almost 10 years!). This version is also the first one featuring Jason [bittner] on drums allowing him to add his signature sound to the track. We also re-worked 'This Is My Own', a track from 'The Art of Balance' sessions, with some new vocal harmonies and a few twists and turns. "For the cover songs, we decided to dip back into our own history to shine some light on bands that were huge influences on us but never seemed to get the attention they deserved. For one, ONLY LIVING WITNESS was an amazing and highly underrated rock band from the Boston area and we covered their tune 'December' — and had a blast doing it! Next, we banged out a version of 'Mark of the Squealer' by NYHC legends LEEWAY. To me, LEEWAY was the ultimate metal/hardcore crossover band with sick thrash riffs and hard-as-nails lyrics. And finally, we recorded an updated version of DANGEROUS TOYS' party anthem 'Teasin' Pleasin'' that features original DANGEROUS TOYS vocalist Jason McMaster singing along with myself. We went through a few thirty packs to make sure we got this one right! Good times indeed. "This will be our last release for Century Media, who as a label have helped us to grow into the band we are and allowed us to achieve things we never thought possible. We see this as the perfect finale to our Century Media legacy and we hope you enjoy it." Want to be the first to hear a track from the new SHADOWS FALL album? If you're at the Taste Of Chaos shows in the U.S., or other selected shows, you'll have a chance to pick up a Black Sampler Plastic Edition '06 card that features a code you can punch in after signing up at www.beyondthepit.net to hear "This Is My Own" from "Fallout from the War". "Fallout from the War" follows the group's most acclaimed disc to date, "The War Within", which originally debuted at No. 20 on The Billboard 200 chart. It has since gone on to sell over 250,000 units in the U.S. alone, and features the Active Rock hit and Grammy-nominated track "What Drives The Weak".

LEAVES' EYES To Release 'Legend Land' EP Continuing the successful journey of their critically acclaimed "Vinland Saga" CD, German/Norwegian act LEAVES' EYES have completed recording of a new mini-album, presenting five brand-new exclusive tracks, entitled "Legend Land". The EP will be released for the price of a single at the end of April/beginning of May 2006 in connection with the band's upcoming tours, which includes dates througout Europe, USA, Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand. The tracks included on the EP are: "Legend Land", "Skraelings", "Viking's Word", "The Crossing" and "Lyset". Vocalist Alex Krull explains: "At first we'd planned to release a single from the 'Vinland Saga' album. However, we decided to record a complete EP with brand new and exclusive songs. This is our way of saying thank you to our fans and their great support. The past tours were amazing! As we will tour a lot this year it will take a while until we have finished our next full-length album. These five powerful and atmospheric tracks developed out of a couple of new brilliant ideas." Vocalist Liv Kristine adds: "The new songs sound fantastic. They are very strong. We had a wonderful time continuing our work with the Viking concept and making further discoveries."

WOLVERINE Sign With CANDLELIGHT RECORDS Sweden's WOLVERINE have posted the following message on their official web site: "We can at last announce that WOLVERINE has signed with Candlelight Records. We've been in touch with various labels and as it turned out Candlelight came up with the best offer by far. "The past 6 months have been really hard for the band and with the split from Earache topping it all off it's extremely nice to have found a new 'home.' "There is no release date set for 'Still' yet but we'll announce it really soon. It's about time the album sees the light of day because we all promise you that some of our best songs are on that album. We definitely want to share them with our fans as soon as humanly possible."

CANDLEMASS Finish Recording Four New Songs With Producer ANDY SNEAP Swedish doomsters CANDLEMASS have recorded four new songs with producer Andy Sneap (NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD). The recordings took place last weekend at the new Polar studios in Stockholm, Sweden and the band say that they are very happy with the result. “The songs are pretty much in the same vein as the stuff on the [self-titled 2005] reunion album, maybe a bit darker," says bassist/songwriter Leif Edling. CANDLEMASS's next studio session will take place in May. The band's new album is tentatively scheduled for release in October 2006 via Nuclear Blast Records. CANDLEMASS last month won a Swedish "Grammy" award in the "Best Hard Rock" category, beating out the likes of HAMMERFALL, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, MESHUGGAH and OPETH. The Swedish doom legends were honored for the "Candlemass" opus, which is available on Nuclear Blast Records. Five back-catalog items from the band - "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", "Ancient Dreams", "Doomed for Live", "Nightfall", and "Essential Doom" - were issued in the U.S. via Candlelight in February

We have just commenced writing for the follow-up to "Alien". We're only a week in, and we're already up to 4 wicked new tunes! I'm really psyched with the new stuff, hell, we all are. And Jed's not even here yet! As everyone knows, STRAPPING is sort of an evolution in progress, and this album will be no different. Anyone looking for an "Alien-Pt.II", or a "City-Pt.II", or hell, even a "Chicken Feather-Pt.II", knows that's not how we work. Fresh new STRAPPING sounds for a fresh new chapter. And, what an exciting chapter this is looking to be. Because, one of the other reasons 2006 is gonna be so rippin' is that, come July, upon the new one's release, STRAPPING has some CRAZY touring plans, which we'll go into later. But, suffice it to say, this will be our most prodigious year, indeed. I'll tell ya all about it next month, no problem...

DERANGED GET READY FOR NEW OBSCENITIES !! Rikard Wermen (drums) gives us a rapid update! "So... It's done! Well, as a matter of fact it was done a couple of weeks ago. The recording of Obscenities in B flat. It wouldn't be much metal if I didn't mention how great, cool, brutal, and simply that it is the best CD we have ever done so... Now, it's done. Ehm, as for the actual recording; Once again, we used Berno Studio. This is the 8´th full length Johan and I records at Bernos, counting a few none Deranged recordings. We have never been much into recording digitally. This time around we recorded the whole sha bang in Pro Tools. Berno got one of the baddest Pro Tools set ups around. We tried it out. Turned out fine. Normally when I'm doing the drum tracks, Johan will be playing along with me. We have never used any metronome or anything. Just the guitar and I. This time around I put down all of the drum tracks without any guitar or anything else. Just by myself and it turned out fine. There's 9 tracks on it and it's said to be released sometime in May. It will be great to have a new CD out. There will be a few surprises on the CD though. And I would like to add that everything you hear on the disc was done in the studio. No cheesy movie samples or anything. I would like to thank Surachai Sutthisasanakul for the great intro you did for Torture. and for nice and much appreciated "stalker talker" parts. I would also like to take the opportunity and say thanks to Berno Paulsson for once again working with us and for keeping up with us. 2006. Obscenities In B Flat 1. Long Live The New Flesh 2. Torture, Rape, Cum And Kill 3. Coven Of Death 4. Crawl With Me, Through The Filth 5. Deflower The Dead 6. Body Fluids From Unknown Source 7. Alive, Swarming Wth Flies 8. Pray On The Weak 9. Dead In A Ditch What else? Hell, I don't know. Go get the CD when it's released and get yourself a opinion of it. www.iamderanged.com

INCANTATION NEW ALBUM UPDATE North American Death Metal legends INCANTATION will be spening most of the next few months finishing up writing material for the follow-up to 2004's "Decimate Christendom” album. John Mc Entee Comments: “We are very focused and have been putting a lot of time into making the new album the best it can be. The new stuff has the traditional Incantation sound consisting of twisted and aggressive fast parts along with the dark agonizing doom we are will known for. We feel that this album will be some of our best work to date. We would like to thank all the Incantation supporters around the world for making 2004 and 2005 such a great success for the band. We would also like to thank all the killer bands we had the chance to tour with like: Krisiun, Nile, Unleashed, Hate Eternal, Vital Remains, Behemoth, Catastrophic, Mortician, The Chasm, Arsis, Into Eternity, Funerus, Hexenhammer , Estuary, Belphegor, Ragnarok just to name a few.” The CD will be once again recorded at Mars Recording Compound in Cleveland Ohio in April/May with engineer and producer Bill Korecky. The group's as-yet-untitled new CD is set for a fall of 2006 release.

TYPE O NEGATIVE Frontman Says New Album May Feature Guest Appearances By ANSELMO, DANZIG Mick Stingley of KNAC.COM recently conducted an interview with TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele. A few excerpts from the chat follow: KNAC.COM: [On the upcoming DVD, "Symphony for the Devil (The World of Type O Negative)", due in the U.S. on March 14] Are you proud? Are you comfortable? Are you happy with the results? Steele: "(pauses) Ah, you know, there is… there are some things in there that I feel should not, maybe, have been portrayed to the public. But everyone else in this band, we kind of like, voted on each other's behavior and stuff. And it was kind of known that, if everyone goes, 'That's funny, that's great! Leave it the fuck in! We don't care what YOU think!' then it stayed. There were things that Johnny did, and Kenny and Josh that they weren't really too happy about, but… 'Fuck you, we're gonna use it anyway!' So what's good for the goose is good for the gander." KNAC.COM: I don't even know where to begin, but the concert footage… it was shot on the "October Rust" tour, or just after? Steele: "This was shot in '99. Now I'm gonna have to back up and explain to you that when we started to formulate this video, with various footage, which, I would imagine was around 2000 or 2001, we were just gonna do a home, like a home-movie-type thing. And this footage from this show in Germany, from '99, was not even considered at the time. So it's really… it's a home movie with live footage. It's not live footage with outtakes. Simply because the video came to our attention right before we were actually gonna finalize the home video. We did some research and we found out that we could buy it; and it was 5.1 digital, and there were three cranes and twelve cameras and all this other stuff and we looked fairly, reasonably well-preserved at that time… so we said, 'All right, let's throw this in.' The entire concert was actually going to be a separate disc and then there was going to be this home movie. But then it got into cost-effectiveness of putting two or three discs into a package and all this other stuff. So we decided that, for people like me with ADD, to have a constant sensory assault, and to keep on cutting the footage and going to different things just to keep the average viewer's attention. Because I have no attention span anyway." KNAC.COM: Well, I think that you guys have this incredible sense of humor, that Brooklyn sense of humor… I mean, you've talked about this. But I guess it gets misconstrued to a lot of people. Steele: "It does, you know? Because we are so used to being sarcastic to each other, like even within this band. We have guests that come up on to the bus and they're horrified. 'How can you talk to each other like that?' And I'm like, 'You know what? Fuck you too!' (laughs) I've known these guys for over thirty years. I have five older sisters and I always wished that I had brothers, and God gave me these three brothers, Kenny, Josh and Johnny. But after thirty years of beating each other up and cheating on each other's girlfriends and playing hockey in the street and playing football, you know, fuckin' each other over and getting drunk and having great times — there's nothing to talk about!" KNAC.COM: (laughs) Steele: "There's NOTHING to talk about. Everybody has their own little corner of the tour bus, and that's it. So, you know… Brooklyn is a very sarcastic place. I like to think that I have a sense of humor and I like people with a sense of humor because one of the greatest feelings I get out of life is actually laughing at myself. Also I like laughing at other things, too; comedies, juvenile pranks and slapstick. Which of course, you saw much of that in the video. So that whole adolescent attitude really comes to the forefront with this DVD." KNAC.COM: Jumping around again, "The Profit$ of Doom" — that was the working title for the last record, was it not? Steele: "Yeah. I mean, I lie about everything, so you can't believe me. But it is the working title for right now. I don't have any titles for the songs, but I can say that the album sounds like a mixture of… let's just say… BLACK SABBATH, PINK FLOYD, THE BEATLES, DISCHARGE, THE CULT, THE CURE, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, PSYCHEDELIC FURS, DEVO and LAIBACH. So prepare to be confused." KNAC.COM: Well… but I don't know. I feel… as a TYPE O NEGATIVE fan who has been following you guys since forever… I feel that, that description would suggest any of your records. Steele: "It does actually, it's just that… the songs for this next album… you see it's really hard for me to be objective because I'm the songwriter. So, it's like, no mother ever thinks that her newborn baby is ugly. You know? And by that I mean it's hard for me to step outside and say what I think, but I will try. The songs are somewhat shorter, they're faster… I'm asking the other guys to actually do more of the vocals — not because I'm losing any nonexistent talent anyway — but the fact is that the other guys have really good voices and I think that they should be utilized. And, also, I've been making calls to see if people like Glenn Danzig or Phil Anselmo would want to do guest vocals or something." KNAC.COM: Wow. Steele: "Because Johnny's very tight with Glenn, because he goes out (on tour) with DANZIG and hopefully, Glenn wouldn't have a problem with that. And (I'll try to) get a hold of Phil. And there's a female vocalist, her name is Jacqueline, she plays in this band called OTTO'S DAUGHTER from Germany, and she's got a really good voice. And some of the stuff that I've written, I believe might call for a feminine touch. So I've been speaking to her about possibly coming in and doing some vocals. But, you know… speaking of CARNIVORE… after this album is done and in the can, I just might be doing a real short CARNIVORE tour…" KNAC.COM: You're kidding… Steele: "… but not… with… uh… it's the original members, but it will be, like… somewhat… well-known… rock-and-rollers… that are going to be a part of this…" KNAC.COM: Wow. Who? Steele: "(pauses) That I can't mention right now. There's going to be down time… I don't know when this next (TYPE O) album is set to be released. I would imagine that if it's done by May 1st, the label really wants six months of “set-up” time… which I think is somewhat excessive; but when you change jobs, you know, there's a whole set of unwritten rules that nobody tell you, you just have to learn them by making a dick out of yourself. You know? And nobody tells you, like you're not supposed to piss in that toilet you supposed to shit in that toilet. Which is how jail was…" Read the entire interview at KNAC.COM.
