    Battles is a quartet comprised of drummer John Stanier of Helmet, The Mark of Cain, and Tomahawk, guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams of Don Caballero and Storm And Stress, guitarist David Konopka of Lynx, and avant solo musician Tyondai Braxton (who has recently collaborated with Prefuse 73).

     

    This compiled material basically amounts to a black hole: 66 minutes of the most hypnotic instrumental music currently being purveyed outside techno or Japan. But whereas semi-analogous Sunn O))) and Boris administer hypnotic assaults through deep immersion in drones and brutal low-end, Battles bring the fury with rigorous, unrelenting grooves.

     

    The Battles formula is pretty straightforward (and one both Williams and Braxton have more or less perfected in their previous work): simple, arrhythmic guitar figures supported by sparse, groove-tastic drumming slowly evolve into surprisingly dense compositions, often featuring staccato keyboard lines and layer upon layer of sometimes beautiful, sometimes chaotic harmonies — sort of like an instrumental version of Discipline-era King Crimson on a heavy Public Enemy binge. It’s not too much of a stretch from Don Cab’s later work, but the crucial difference is Battles is a lot tighter, more focused and Williams is calling the shots this time around.
