  1. CULT OF LUNA Complete Work On New Album Apocalyptic Swedish outfit CULT OF LUNA have completed work on their new album, entitled "Somewhere Along The Highway". Slated for an April 24 release via Earache Records, the album's initial tracking took place over seven days in a wooden octagon barn surrounded by "Blair Witch"-style scenery close to the band's hometown of Umeå in northern Sweden. According to sound engineer Magnus Lindberg, the remote location coupled with the spotting of "Wicca witch women dancing in the woods" and the actual acoustics of the barn itself all contributed towards creating the perfect ambiance to lay down the basic tracks which were done primarily live, as a unit — a departure from previous CULT OF LUNA recording protocol. Further recording and mixing happened in Tonteknik studios where both the band's 2004 album "Salvation" and its predecessor "The Beyond" (2003) were recorded. And the result promises to more raw and unpolished then the bands previous releases. "Somewhere Along The Highway" track listing: 01. Marching To The Heartbeats 02. Finland 03. Back To Chapel Town 04. And With Her Came The Birds 05. Thirtyfour 06. Dim 07. Dark City, Dead Man

  8. NAPALM DEATH Frontman Reveals Working Album Title, New Songtitles Zach Palmer of Doomsday Music recently conducted an interview with NAPALM DEATH frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway. An excerpt from the chat follows: Doomsday Music: You guys have been playing for nearly 20-25 years, somewhere in that area. Do you ever get to the point where you just want to go home and sit down? Barney: "You know what? Well, it's been 25 years this year, NAPALM DEATH in its entirety, which is obviously a long time, especially for a band that is so outside of the mainstream. I get your point, of course there's times where I am tired on tour and I feel a bit under the weather or whatever, but at the end of the day, we've got to keep this band going. It's got to keep moving around and the only way to do that is for us to get out there and do what we've got to do; keep playing as much as we can, do the albums, make sure they are good, make sure that every one moves along a little bit more, pushes the thing along. That's what we've got to do basically. I think it's human nature to say, 'Aw fuck, I really don't want to do this today,' but once you get out there and you get into it, you forget what you were thinking earlier on in the day, so it's all good to me. I take it in my stride and I'm happy to be doing it and I'm happy to be going this long and all the rest of it. It's a good experience. It's a good feeling." Doomsday Music: In the press release that was released, I think it was yesterday, you mentioned that you hope to go back in the studio sometime in May? Barney: Yeah. Doomsday Music: And at the current time, I believe you said you don't currently have anything other than a few lyrics written? Barney: Well, that was mainly said because I actually do have about four or five songs, and as much as I have got those, we actually haven't come together yet as a four piece unit in a rehearsal studio, so things could always change, but the stuff that I have got I'm really happy with, the titles are really good, they are definitely ready from my end. I can give you some of those titles if you want. Doomsday Music: Sure, yeah definitely! Barney: "Yeah, OK. Let me try to remember all of these. There's a track called 'Persona Nongrata'. That's obviously a Latin term, and what it means is someone that becomes a lesser being. It's actually a legal term that stretches back quite a few years and the whole concept of that is that some people are just born into this world and just because of their circumstances they are persona nongrata, in other words, pointing out what a real unfair situation that is to be in. So there's that one, then there's… it's like a two part song really. The second half is called 'Smear Campaign' and obviously a smear campaign is something that is like, it could be a verbal or basically a series of actions taken out that basically dirty someone's name or reputation. I'm thinking that I want to use that for the title of the album actually, because the way that's being used, the whole concept is, what I'm trying to get across with this album is the theme is religion basically. I know a lot of people go down that route, but I think increasingly we see governments of assorted countries being governed on a religious basis, and to me that is just going to take us down paths that we really don't need to be going down. I think for the good of the world, especially as fragile as it is at the moment, to try and govern people on theories, on these sort of unproven theories, it just doesn't wash. Doing things in the name of God, well, surely you should be doing things in the name of man, you know? [Laughs] Not in the name of God, so that's my whole point basically, so there's going to be a whole series of images around that if that comes up to be the album title. So there's that one there. There's another track called 'Call That an Option?' with a question mark on the end, and an 'option' being the nuclear option, which Britain is certainly pushing and I believe America is too. They're trying to say that we should enter another nuclear age where we relying on nuclear fuels for consumption. Now bearing in mind Chernobyl etc. etc., I don't think that's a good way to go particularly. And there's a second part to that as well. You've got the situation in Iran at the moment, and I've got a very simple comment to make on that. It's not saying that these guys should have nuclear weapons because these guys shouldn't, it's actually saying no nuclear weapons. Any nuclear weapons are no good at all. But by the same token, how can you criticize a nation for trying to develop a nuclear arsenal when you yourselves are holding arsenals so big and with so much potential to wipe people off the face of the earth, how can you sit there and criticize other people for trying to even the balance a little? You can't do that! America and Israel and many other countries, the very people who are most vocal in opposing what Iran is doing right now are the very people who are holding some serious fucking weaponry. Now, surely that is hypocrisy of the highest order." Read the entire interview at www.doomsdaymusic.com.

  16. IN FLAMES Guitarist: We Cannot Write An Album Like 'The Jester Race' Again Lords of Metal e-zine recently conducted an interview with IN FLAMES guitarist Björn Gelotte. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow: Lords of Metal: IN FLAMES has always been the kind of band with a lot of diversity, with this new release being no exception. There is the balance between intensity and aggression but with an emphasis on melody. How difficult is it to find that balance? Is it something that comes naturally or do you have to look after? Björn Gelotte: "Well, to us it is extremely important to stay true to ourselves. We are not focusing on what others would like to hear but do what we want to do and what we do best. We want to stay loyal to ourselves. So when you hear a kind of balance it is something that is natural and not something we have been searching for or tried to achieve." Lords of Metal: If you do not stay loyal to yourself and try to do what everybody else want to do, if you are not being yourself, making music for the fans or the label instead of making it for yourself; well, it shows in the end? Björn Gelotte: "You know, in the end it is us playing and hearing the song on an (almost) daily basis. Fans can come up to the show, they might even visit a couple of them and they will be playing the songs regularly but the ones we have to write the music for … is ourselves, as we work with our songs each and every day. And if we would do something that feels not great for even just one of us, I am sure this will show either way in the performance or the quality of the music." Lords of Metal: On the track 'Dead End' there is a female vocalist singing with Anders [Fridén]. Who is she and how did you get in touch with her? Björn Gelotte: "Her name is Lisa Miskovsky. She is a singer/song writer from Sweden and here everybody knows about her. She has a very beautiful voice and is a very talented singer. The things she normally does do are very far away from what we do and I think nobody expected her to come up on one of our CDs. We heard that she, although she does do a totally different thing in music, likes metal and especially IN FLAMES. So once we got the chance to do something together we fully went for it and I think it worked out great. The vocals of Lisa are a great contrast with the vocals of Anders and it turned out perfectly. The vocals do not sound gothic as well as we definitely did not want that to happen." Lords of Metal: Anders has been quoted as saying "We would never do the same album over and over again." With that said, how do you feel that the band continues to evolve while still maintaining the IN FLAMES overall sound? Björn Gelotte: "Hey, we all have grown older now, we have become different people. Sometimes people ask us if we ever can write an album like 'The Jester Race' again, but we do not want and cannot write such an album again. We all have grown into different people and musicians now, so that is impossible and is not something we want to achieve. Now we focus on playing the songs live and that is different from the songs on 'The Jester Race', although they turned out to be great live." Read the entire interview at www.lordsofmetal.nl.

  19. NIGHTWISH Mainman Says He Has '14 Pieces' Of Music Written For Next Album NIGHTWISH keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen has posted the following message on the band's official web site: "It's been three months since the last show in Hartwall Arena and things are finally calming down. I just read through the yet unfinished version of the upcoming NIGHTWISH book. I was very impressed. It made me feel nostalgic, happy, ashamed and sad at the same time. This book is written by Mr. Mape Ollila, and it's being finished as we speak. The Finnish version of the book will be released in May. Also the live DVD, 'End of an Era', will be released later this year but we have no information about the exact release date yet. "At the moment I'm occupied with writing songs for the next NIGHTWISH album. 14 pieces done so far. I'm also participating in Timo Rautiainen's solo album, the new FOR MY PAIN… album, and some KOTITEOLLISUUS' live gigs before summer. With NIGHTWISH we will start rehearsing the new stuff in June, entering the studio in September. Again we will write a diary through this site so you guys know what's happening while in the studio. New NIGHTWISH homepage will also see daylight soon. "At the moment Emppu [Vuorinen, guitar] has his own side projects, Marco [Hietala, bass] is working with the new TAROT album and Jukka [Nevalainen, drums] is busy with his new project, unrelated to music business. "The new singer will be announced through this site when the time comes. Please believe in nothing that's not confirmed on this page." As previously reported, "End of an Era" will contain footage of NIGHTWISH's final concert with singer Tarja Turunen, which took place on October 21, 2005 at the Hartwall arena in Helsinki, Finland. NIGHTWISH fired Turunen via an "open letter," which was given to the singer immediately following the Helsinki show. The band's follow-up to 2004's "Once" is tentatively due in mid-2007.
